ICE Kidnaps 11 Ecuadorian Workers in Danbury:
Activists March-- Mayor announces plans to repress people's movement.
Sept. 19, DanburyÑEleven Ecuadorian day laborers were picked up from Kennedy Park by an undercover police agent posing as a contractor.
The workers were taken to Danbury Police Department, where local and federal immigration agents awaited to transport them to Hartford, and then to Boston for imprisonment. They have not been charged yet with a crime, and most of them have not been able to contact their family members.
According to the Mayor's office, similar "raids" are expected to occur in Stamford, Brewster, and Katonah.
Immigrants rights activists called a demonstration for Saturday to demand the release of the "Danbury 11." Mayor Mark Boughton and the Danbury Police Department attempted to discourage protesters from marching, but could not prevent it, because there are no laws in Danbury that require protesters to beg for a permit from city hall before they exercise their first amendment right of assembly and free speech.
Mayor Boughton has assembled a committee to put those laws on the books, and prevent future marches in Danbury, citing concerns over "public safety."
